Characteristics and Applications of Busbar

A bus bar is a wire used to combine the generator, transformer and variety kinds of electrical appliances together in distribution equipment of power plant and substation. Its major function is to collect, distribute and transfer electric energy. Therefore, it also can be called as electric bus bar. In substation, inlet and outlet lines need certain electric safer intervals. Thus, circuits cannot be lead from one place. In that case, the electric bus bar is capable to ensure the safety and flexibility of circuit connection. Thus it shows that the bus bar is indispensible in complicated systems.
While operation, there is huge electric energy passing through the bus bar. Therefore, it will bear quite large heating and electrodynamics effect while short cuts. So it is required to reasonably choose the material and section of busbar.
Generally, the bus bar manufacturer has provided two types of bus bar – flexible busbar and rigid busbar in the market. Most flexible busbars are made of copper and aluminum. They are used in outdoor distribution equipment with high voltage, while rigid busbars mainly used in indoor distribution equipment with low voltage.
In terms of materials, there are copper bus, aluminum bus, steel bus bar and CCA busbar. Firstly, the copper bus has low resistivity, high mechanical strength and strong corrosion resistance. It is an indispensible material for the production of windings of motor, high and low voltage electric appliance, switching contacts and wires used for power installation. Secondly, the aluminum busbar has higher resistivity than copper bus. But it is lighter and has simpler processing and cheaper price. Thirdly, the CCA busbar contains both copper and aluminum. Therefore, it integrates strong oxidation resistance of copper and light weight and low price of aluminum. Fourthly, the steel bus has the larges resistivity and strong skin effect. The biggest advantages of it are strong machinery strength and low price. It only applies high voltage circuits with small capacity and low voltage direct current circuits. It is mainly used in the grounding wire of grounding device.
In terms of section, the busbar can be divided into rectangle, round and groove busbar. The rectangle busbar has good cooling conditions and small skin effect. It is usually used in indoor power distribution equipment with 35KV or below. Similarly, the round busbar also has small skin effect and good cooling conditions. Moreover, it has smooth surface and high voltage of corona discharge. Thus, it applies to outdoor power distribution equipment with above 35kv. For the groove busbar, it has good proximity effect and good cooling conditions and metal utilization.
Different types of busbar have different characteristics and applications. One should careful choose a proper busbar according to the mentioned above.
