Conductor can be perceived as the heart of the busbar. Conductor material is closely linked with performance of the busbar. Accordingly, option of conductor material seems very important. On the market, conductor material is mainly available in copper, aluminum, CCA and aluminum plated copper.
 
Copper and aluminum
 
Copper and aluminum may be one of the most widely used conductor materials. It's generally believed that copper is superior to most materials in conductivity. So, copper is commonly used in busbar system. Although copper busbars are better than aluminum busbars in chemical stability, strength and rigidness, its rising price may offer aluminum bus duct a chance.
 
Aluminum is less expensive than copper. Low production cost is what manufacturers always want to achieve. Low cost is equal to more profits. In order to be cost savings, aluminum bus bar would be the first choice for manufacturers who hope for cost saving or middle/small scale production.
 
Aluminum for conductor material is worth considering, not simply because of its less expensiveness. With involving alloy element, aluminum can offer better strength, rigidness or chemical stability like copper.
 
CCA (copper clad aluminum)
 
Because of increasing attention to bus duct, innovative materials have been available based on conventional material (copper and aluminum). Copper clad aluminum bus duct, for instance. Actually, early in 1960s, many manufacturers have focused on researching CCA. It's regarded as the third generation conductor material.
 
This conductor material is able to replace copper or aluminum. CCA busbar absorbs strengths of copper (stable conductivity) and aluminum (light weight, low density, less expensiveness, etc). To be increased corrosive resistance of the CCA, zinc plating treatment is usually adopted. Summarily, CCA busbar can offer better tensile strength, ductility, plasticity, light weight, conductivity, low product cost, etc.
 
Copper-coated aluminum
 
Copper-coated aluminum is similar to copper clad aluminum in performance. Both of them involve the combination of the aluminum and copper. Their difference is the manufacturing process. Aluminum must be coated with a layer of zinc at first, before coating copper. This is because it's more difficult to directly coat copper on aluminum. Coating copper on aluminum primarily works to improve corrosive resistance.
 
Sometimes, it's hard to make a quick decision. Each type of conductor material features differently. You can't summarily assess which is the best material for bus duct. It's because this option related to conductor material should be consistent with economic strength, production demand or installation. After you take these into consideration, it's easy to know what conductor material you need.
