Material Compositions Influence Quality of Welding Electrode 2014-04-11

The welding electrode is very important to the welding process for joining two or more pieces of metal. The welding electrode is manufactured from the welding electrode raw material which has the function of welding the metal workpieces. The electrode is available in different types such as the E6010 welding electrode, E7010 welding electrode, etc. due to the different welding material compositions. The welding electrode is composed by two parts which are the core wire and the coating. The core wire is deigned to be in certain diameter and length, and it has the functions of being used as the electrode to generate electric arc and being used the filling metal after it is melted to form welding line with the melted base material. The chemical compositions of the core wire greatly influence the quality of the welding electrode.

The welding electrode raw material is chosen according to the principles of same strength as the base material, same compositions as the base material, crack resistance, air hole resistance, etc. The welding electrode made from properly selected welding electrode material can make the welding electrode to have the ability of preventing cracks in the welding lines when it is used for the welding structure with high welding rigidity, complex shape and dynamical loading. The welding material can influence the ability of the welding electrode on preventing the air holes from generating in the welding lines to result in bad welding quality. At the same time, the quality of the coating can also influence the property of the welding electrode.

The coating of the electrode is made of the welding electrode material including marble, fluorite, ferroalloy, binder, etc. which are prepared according to certain proportion. The coating has the main function of making the electric arc to be easily lighted and burned stably so as to generate a large amount of gas and slag to protect the molten metal from oxidation, and it can remove harmful impurities in the molten bath by the metallurgy action and improve the mechanical property of the welding line. If the coating is not uniformly coated on the wire core, the quality of the welding electrode can be greatly influenced because the wire core can be corroded by other materials without good protection from the coating.

Besides, bad coating can not prevent the welding electrode such as the E6010 welding electrode, E7010 welding electrode, etc. from absorbing moisture which can greatly weaken the welding quality. Therefore, the welding electrode raw material used for making the wire core and coating of the welding electrode must be properly selected, and the manufacturing process of the welding electrode must be well controlled.
